The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival did away with their custom-built riverside hubs over the past two years and instead created the House of Food and Wine. This year, the Coopers Malthouse in Southbank is being transformed into the festival's main hub for three days of dinners, talks and demos from March 9-11, the festival's opening weekend.

Headlining is Australia's favourite expat chef Curtis Stone. His Los Angeles restaurants (vegetable-focussed Maude, and temple of meat, Gwen LA) have solidified his global reputation. Curtis will be hosting a Labor day barbecue, with a masterclass and talk to follow. The Theatre of Ideas sessions and Masterclasses will run from March 9-11.

A $65 day ticketgets punters access to demos from Rosario Sanchez, the Noma expat turned taco master; Melbourne chocolate expert Kirsten Tibballs and another Aussie expat, chef Jake Kellie who now works at Singapore's Burnt Ends. Talk stars include Lune Croissant founder Kate Reid, green-fingered Quay chef Peter Gilmore and Brae's Dan Hunter and cover everything from gender to personal drive and the secret life of plants.

Belles Hot Chicken, Sundae School Ice Creamery and Mamasita will be creating bespoke menus for the weekend. Tickets for after hours sessions on Friday and Saturday when secret guest chefs will collaborations are still available.

House of Food and Wine open noon-6pm March 9-11, Coopers Malthouse Theatre, 112 Sturt Street, Southbank. $65-$130. Full program www.mfwf.com.au
