It's on like Donkey Kong at 8bit's new CBD burger bar. After gaining a cult following in Footscray, Shayne McCallum and Alan Sam can expect to see queues forming at their second 8bit, which opens today.

Once a convenience store, the light-filled site on the corner of Swanston and Little Bourke streets will seat about 20 at a squeeze. It has been transformed with an aqua and white colour scheme featuring graphics inspired by 1980s arcade games.

The CBD 8bit will serve the same menu that pulls a crowd in Footscray – burgers on soft buns, hot dogs doused with curry ketchup or pickle relish, sides of onion rings and potato gems, and milkshakes with salted caramel or peanut butter, along with occasional specials.

Stand by next Friday for the Donkey Kong special, a gut-busting opening combo that squashes three patties, fried onion strings, bacon, cheese and banana ketchup inside a sesame-sprinkled bun.

It will come with a side of smoked paprika-dusted potato gems, a nod to the oil barrels the villainous Donkey Kong character tossed in the video game. You'll be able to wash them down with a Perky Nana milkshake, made with banana-flavoured Kiwi confectionery.

Open daily 11am-late.
