The lanyard-swingers of SX1 and SX2 - that's the state government employees headquartered in the Southern Cross development to you and me - now have a specialty coffee destination to add to their daily agendas, with Axil Coffee Roasters opening a full-service cafe in Southern Cross Lane.

The snacky menu features luxe jaffles (think confit duck with white beans, or thyme-and-garlic roasted mushrooms with gruyere), plus sweet hits such as peanut butter, chocolate and banana topped waffles.

Coffee options include espresso and filter brews of Axil's seasonal blends and single origins.

Keep an eye out for Mayday, Axil's new Bridge Road, Richmond project, opening in mid-January with a full breakfast and lunch menu of "modern cafe food", says Axil's Dave Makin.

Open Mon-Fri 7am-4pm (closed from Christmas Day, reopening January 4).

Southern Cross Lane, 121 Exhibition Street, Melbourne, 03 9042 5242, axilcoffee.com.au.
