Level up at 8Bit's burger pop-up on Flinders Lane

Nola James

Go to the next level at Melbourne's latest burger pop-up, 8Bit Bonus Round, opening on Flinders Lane at the end of the month.

Shayne McCallum, co-owner of parent burger shacks 8Bit (Footscray, Swanston Street) and barbecue joint Up in Smoke (Footscray) says to expect five all-new burgers, the "bonus round", and a semi-permanent home for vego burger the Zelda, only before seen as a weekly special.

This time around there's a vegan burger too with non-dairy cheese and a milk-free, gluten-free bun.

The plan is to use the space as a test kitchen of sorts; other new menu items include fried mac'n'cheese burgers, waffle fries topped with cheese and bacon and "chicken asteroids" – think popcorn chicken smothered in chilli cheese – and milkshakes too.

Architects EAT, responsible for the original video game-themed design, will take care of the decor. Expect more pixels, a few bar stools and a counter set up for takeaway trade.

McCallum has access to the space at 113 Flinders Lane at least until the end of the year; he's expecting to open Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner by the end of July.
