Melbourne's oldest continuously owned restaurant, Vlado's, this week marks 50 years in the same Bridge Road, Richmond, location. That's half a century of little sausages and grilled liver to start, the choice of the best porterhouse, rump, or fillet steak, salads, and strawberry pancakes to finish.

Vlado Gregurek OAM died in May 2012, but the restaurant continues under the ownership of his widow and his son Michael, and staff whose longevity of service is nearly as remarkable.

The menu does not change. Michael Gregurek considered introducing chips, but decided against it. ''That would have taken the focus from the beef and filled people unnecessarily,'' he says. ''The star of the show is beef.''

Every diner this week will be given a gift - a custom-made steak knife.
