The annual open-air Night Noodle Markets roll into Birrarung Marr this week, transforming the grassy riverside patch into a kaleidoscope of fairy lights, sizzling snacks and our favourite Asian-food vendors all in one spot.

This year, ice-cream legends Gelato Messina have set their sights on Siam, offering a Thai-inspired menu that includes a halo-halo-esque "Phuket Bucket" and a deep-fried, possibly phallic "Bangkok Banana".

We're happy to see some fresh faces join the scene: Drumpling's unexpected dumpling flavours such as beef rendang or cheeseburger are a curiosity that need to be tasted to be believed; vegan Vietnamese by the Pham Sisters will satisfy that one friend we all have; and Korean shaved-ice mini mountains by Scoopy's Milk Bar and newcomer Kumokumo's Japanese souffle pancakes will provide not just dessert, but the 2019 critical must-have – good Insta content.

But the best news about this year's event is that our beloved pooches are invited, too. On Saturday, November 9, dog-owners are encouraged to bring their pups along for a dinner date, a special treat and a professionally photographed portrait.

Night Noodle Markets run from November 7-24.

Open Mon-Tue 5pm-9pm, Wed-Thu 5pm-10pm, Fri 5pm-11pm, Sat 4pm-10pm, Sun 4pm-9pm; card only. Details: goodfoodmonth.com/melbourne/night-noodle-markets
