Vegan pizza is having a moment.
Red Sparrow, Melbourne's first entirely plant-based pizzeria, launched in Collingwood last year and is about to launch into shops. Its (faux) pepperoni and Hawaiian-ish pizzas are currently available only in Warrandyte IGA, but its New Wave Pizza brand will be spreading to Fitzroy's Cruelty Free Shop and beyond soon. There's a new vegan-friendly pizzeria in Coburg, too. Stretched at 53 Moreland Street, Coburg, swings both ways with its toppings but around 10 are either vegetarian or can be made vegan with faux mozzarella and almond feta, plus, gluten-free bases don't cost extra. It's from the team behind Long Story Short cafe and Pizza e Birra in St Kilda, and if you head in at 5pm on April 19, the first 100 pizzas are free.
Finally, Paul Douglas and Belinda Smullen, who owned and operated Emerald's The General Food Store, have given the Dandenong Ranges the all-day trattoria it's been waiting for in Bam Bam Italian (445 Belgrave-Gembrook Road, Avonsleigh), where much of the menu can be veganised, from pizzas (they use vegan mozzarella) to the fritto misto.
