In the battle of the birds, Sydney chicken giants El Jannah and Chargrill Charlie's are both heavyweight chook contenders.

And both are back on the expansion path. El Jannah, which has its roots in Granville and made a splash with a push into Newtown last year, has created excitement on social media with photos of new shopfront signage near Parramatta Road suggesting it is now Burwood bound. Reps for El Jannah didn't respond for comment.

There's plenty happening at Justin Bieber's go-to Sydney chicken shop, Chargrill Charlie's, which has ridden out the restaurant shutdown with a steady stream of takeaway and clever menu tie-ins with local restaurants.

Co-owner Maon Sher told Good Food it had been tough for smaller shops – such as the normally powerhouse Woollahra venue – because of social distancing requirements.

Chargrill Charlie's in Drummoyne is getting a new neighbour, with Charlotte Cafe opening on Saturday, May 30.

And Sher confirmed rumours a new store is opening near Bake Bar, on Frenchmans Road, in Randwick. It's slated for a late June start.
