Lamington bar by day, tachinomi (standing) bar by night. A new star has risen in Newtown by the name of White Moon.

Last July, Good Food shared news Tokyo Lamington was working on a Japanese-style bar, which had become a popular attraction in Newtown with the launch in December of Ante.

Tokyo Lamington co-owner Eddie Stewart hoped to open White Moon Bar last August, but lockdowns and staff shortages delayed lift-off.

It might just be worth the wait. Tokyo drink slinger Karen Kimura is in charge of the sake, while Jieun Lee, a graduate of Cumulus Inc. and Quay, is taking care of the snacks, such as karaage chicken.

In true Tokyo style, it's a standing bar, with six sakes on offer and room for just 12 customers. When the sun sets, the noren curtain goes up out front.

"It gives us a chance to share our passion for Japan," Stewart says.

If you're lucky, there might even be a sneaky lamington on the menu.

Open Wed-Sun 5pm-10pm, 277 Australia Street, Newtown, tokyolamington.com
