Yokocho means 'alley way' in Japanese. In Melbourne, it's also the name of the modern new Japanese eatery taking dining up a notch or three in Mid City Arcade.

The vibrant street culture of Tokyo has been deliberately re-imagined through the minimalistic fit out and attention to detail. "We chose this venue as it brings back a lot of memories in Mid City Arcade, where in my younger years used to watch Asian movies and hangout at the old Red Silks balcony. As you peer down the walkway of Mid City, it does give you that illusion that you are in a Tokyo alley," said co-owner, Benny Lui.

The food covers three main style of Japanese cuisine: sushi and sashimi, yaktori and tempura, with express bento and share plates also on the menu, while drinks-wise sake and cocktails keep things interesting alongside a good selection of spirits wine and beer.

The 80-seat dining hall has a fun, modern feel, but the prized spot for warmer weather will be out on the massive outdoor terrace. Overlooking bustling Bourke street it couldn't be more central, or summery.
