Contemporary

Million-dollar views abound in Palm Cove, but Far Horizons is easily the pick of the bunch with an absolute beachfront position and candlelit tables set beneath swaying palms. If the wind is too wild outside, the elegant dining pavilion is almost as pleasant, and the breeze floats in gently through concertina doors. Service is friendly and laidback, in keeping with the holiday vibe. Menus are also well suited to smart-casual seaside dining but there is room for improvement in execution. What could be quintessential seafood fettuccine, generously tossed with sweet prawns, smoked salmon with well-balanced flavours of garlic and lemon was held back by chewy calamari. A seafood tian also just missed the mark - a pretty layered tower of scallop, prawn, Moreton Bay bug with avocado and salmon wanted only for a squeeze of lemon juice and a little seasoning. The dessert menu is a succinct list of crowd pleasers. Chef Greg Lamont took over as we went to press, so expect changes.
