Five spots to do baking and cake classes in Canberra

So you'd like to get creative with cake, or finally learn to make bread. But where to start? We've rounded up a bunch of Canberra spots where you can get in touch with your inner baker.

Canberra's premiere cake supplies store also plays host to a variety of specialised decorating courses. Look out for guest appearances from star decorators from across the world. There are also kids classes during school holidays where budding bakers can learn to make cupcakes decorated with everything from Batman to Minions.

Top chef Andrew and Catherine Haskins' cooking school at Fyshwick mostly focuses on meals but their schedule this winter also includes a "Perfecting Pastry" course where you learn to make sweet and savoury shortcrust and butter puff pastry. Alayne Chanter and her team at Foodish do cooking classes at the Belconnen Markets. Among their upcoming schedule are a workshop on pastries where you learn to make shortcrust, blind bake and eventually turn out Danishes and other delights. For the past three years David Damour, the master baker at Bean & Grain, has also run workshops on breadmaking.

The Canberra Institute of Technology runs regular short courses for people who want to learn to cook and their cake courses are often very popular. The Introduction to Cake Decorating is a six week beginners guide to using fondant, making sugar roses and moulding little animals and people.
