Three of the best Canberra wines to try

Canberra is so hot right now. A recent wine tasting in the nation's capital showcased some of the best NSW has to offer and the Canberra District wine region shone bright. From newcomers such as Sholto Wines to long-time heroes, including Ravensworth Wines' Bryan Martin, there's plenty to explore – and an increasingly exciting bar and restaurant scene is helping to spruik them. Keep your eyes peeled for these beauties.

MADA Wines 2021 Chardonnay, Tumbarumba, NSW, $40

Watching people taste wine is a joy when you see the moment a wine hits them fair in the heart. This is that kind of drop. Winemaker Hamish Young is one to watch (or dare I say it, stalk – new releases won't be around long). This citrus-packed pleasure-maker was whole-bunch-pressed to new French oak and concrete. Textural, gorgeous. 13 per cent alcohol.

Mallaluka 2021 Syrah, Yass, NSW, $40

Bright as a button but no flimsy flash in a pan, this syrah is a silky, sensual winner. Moments of prettiness are disarming – close your eyes and savour them. Winemaker Sam Leyshon used fruit in equal parts from Gundagai, Hilltops and Canberra District regions (30 per cent whole bunch for a little crunch). Unfiltered. Bravo. Age it a few years if you've got the patience.13.2 per cent alcohol.

Ravensworth Wines Outlandish Claims Bitter Tonic, Murrumbateman, NSW, $42

During a recent Foo Fighters gig, late drummer Taylor Hawkins' son Shane stepped up to the drum kit to play My Hero? It was explosive and emotive. This is the liquid equivalent. The nebbiolo bitters is so full of fresh blood orange flavours, it's like fireworks on the palate. There's also coriander seed, tarragon and cinchona (quinine) in the mix. Unforgettable. Add ice and enjoy the ride. 17 per cent alcohol.
