Sydney taxi and Uber drivers can consider themselves warned. The city's plague of restaurants with "Canton" in the name is only heating up. Hot on the heels of Canton! Canton! opening in the city this month – with former Tim Ho Wan chef Jackie Chan in the kitchen – and a team of feng shui experts sweeping the space, Canton Kitchen has opened in Castlecrag.
Canton is quickly becoming the Jack or Charlotte of restaurant monikers in a city that already boasts the House of Canton, Canton Village, Canton Noodle House and Canton Barbecue Restaurant.
Castlecrag's newly minted Canton Kitchen has a little extra lustre, with former Queen Chow head chef Jason Chan in the kitchen.
His opening menu sounds worthy of a detour, with mapo tofu, Alaskan crab and puffed rice alongside dishes such as Mongolian lamb ribs and a kung pao chicken with macadamia nuts, dried chillies and Sichuan pepper. There's even a Moreton Bay bug dish with garlic and butter. Try finding that in Canton.
"Canton Kitchen is all about celebrating the delicate and refined flavours of Cantonese cuisine while offering a unique take on the classic dishes that Australian diners treasure," Jason Chan says.
Open lunch Fri-Sun; dinner Tue-Sun.
Quadrangle Shopping Village, 100 Edinburgh Road, Castlecrag, 02 9958 3288, cantonkitchen.com.au
