Le Coq in Rozelle shares the love with free crepes for the community

If the city-wide lockdown has made Sydneysiders ponder what they miss, one of those things is the role local restaurants and cafes provide in creating a sense of community.

David Poirier, the owner of Rozelle staple Le Coq, felt it too. Wanting to give something back to the community that supports his business, he has started giving away free lemon and Nutella crepes on Wednesdays at 3pm.

While customers can't congregate inside, the socially distanced line is bringing some interaction back to the suburb.

"The queue went all the way down the street, but everyone behaved really well and were COVID-safe," he says. "There were people of every age, families, some kids came along without parents, some older people and some single people.

"While everyone was wearing a mask, I could still see the happiness in their eyes. Until we ran out, and then we saw a different look in people's eyes. We apologised, it was heartbreaking to see sad little children's eyes staring and asking why?"

Poirier and his crepe-making team will be back this Wednesday. "The offer will continue until the end of lockdown or until I go bankrupt," he says.
