Mary's has confirmed it is headed east, taking its burgers, fried chicken and natural wine to a new eatery at Moore Park's Entertainment Quarter. It will open alongside a sprawling live music venue from the Mary's crew in October.
The news won't surprise readers – Good Food tipped the move last month. Mary's sideline 1200-person live music venue, opposite the Hordern Pavilion, now has a name: Liberty Hall.
While NSW 24-Hour Economy Commissioner Michael Rodrigues is touting the project as "a big shot in the arm" for the city, the architects of Mary's burger and bands project are keen to jump in.
"Taking action is what creates change and helps build a positive future and that's what we look to embrace," Mary's co-owner Kenny Graham says.
"We are humbled … to take the reins of another fallen live music venue and pour energy and hard work into creating an exciting creative space for Sydney's arts community."
Mary's will take the substantial former site of Max Watt's, on Errol Flynn Boulevard.
The Mary's team is no stranger to the live music scene, having rebooted The Lansdowne Hotel as a music venue in 2017, a program they ran until earlier this year, calling last drinks when their lease expired.
Co-owners Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham also relaunched Sydney live music venue The Basement as Mary's Underground in 2019.
It's more good news for the precinct, which has had mixed food fortunes over the years. Last summer, Merivale took up residency at the Sydney Cricket Ground next door, providing food to event-goers.
