Shuk shimmies to Surry Hills with its latest spin-off

In the decade since Shuk opened at Bondi, the popular Israeli-inspired eatery has spread north to Chatswood and spawned spin-offs Shuk Bakery and Shuk Falafel. Next stop? Well, Surry Hills is now all Shuk-ed up as well, its newest venue wedged between Maloneys Grocer and The Clock Hotel on Crown Street.

There's some serendipity in the location, with Maloneys stocking some of its products. Shuk co-owner Yoni Kalfus explains they've long coveted the suburb and its canny food clientele.

"We have always loved Surry Hills and the community's appreciation in food and culture of eating out," he says.

They'll need all their wits and cunning: Shuk Surry Hills, a combination of cafe, bakery and food store, has only 16 seats.

"We wanted there to be a familiarity between the venues, the single round table upon entry, the clean white tiles and the long share-style cafe counter features but in a tighter design to create ease of service and faster turnarounds for this area," Kalfus says.

The new outlet will offer a "best of" Shuk's different venues. Expect plenty of Israeli and broader Middle Eastern classics from head chef and co-owner German Sanchez.
