The past week's downpour in Sydney has struck another blow, this time for noodle fans.

The long-running Night Noodle Markets, which were scheduled to be held later in March, have been postponed due to saturated grounds at Prince Alfred Park.

Following days of heavy rain and extreme weather, the City of Sydney has deemed the site unsafe for large public events that require vehicles, temporary structures and high foot traffic.

The news comes after a two-year hiatus for the festival, which like much of the hospitality and events industry, has faced severe disruptions due to the pandemic.

The new location next to Central Station will take weeks to recover, and relocation is not possible due to widespread waterlogging at alternative sites across the city.

While the organisers are disappointed the event cannot proceed as planned, the safety and comfort of market-goers, stallholders and suppliers is their top priority, says Venessa Cowell, the head of Food Events at Nine (publishers of this masthead).

"We want to ensure everyone has the best time possible … and we look forward to announcing new dates shortly," she says.

Stalls at the family- and pet-friendly event will include May's Malaysian Hawker, Fishbowl, Wonderbao, Teppanyaki Noodles and Flying Noodles along with old favourites Gelato Messina and Hoy Pinoy.

Ticket-holders who have already registered online will be able to use their tickets on the new dates.
