Contemporary$$

Backstreet cafes conjure images of converted milk bars or garages decked in sharehouse-chic. Not here. Tim Tehan, of Birdman Eating, has created a schmick, modern den underneath the whizzbang 'Artist' apartments. Cafe by day, it's a bistro-bar come sunset. Brunch offerings include the usual suspects egg-and-bacon-wise, perhaps accompanied by salmon gravlax. Sweet-tooths plump for rich ricotta hotcakes with caramelised banana ice-cream, pecans and maple syrup. The extensive evening menu runs the gamut of snacky - maybe house-made terrine or white anchovies - through to chicken ballotine or duo of venison.
