Modern Australian$$
The owners are seriously well travelled, but instead of collecting snowdomes and wooden carvings, they've collected recipes. Crabapple's menu has both cafe favourites, such as pancakes - here made with buttermilk and banana, and topped with mascarpone - and food 'postcards', such as north Indian curry baked eggs with lentils, purple heirloom carrots and a side of flatbread. Lunch could be slow-cooked lamb with cheesy, soft semolina gnocchi topped with crisped sage and toasted almonds. It's all masterfully cooked; no shortcuts here. The room is cottage cosy, and service tiptop - overall, it's something to write home about.
