Italian

Some of Melbourne's best pizza can be found in this Victorian corner shopfront, so expect queues. It's nice to begin with DOC's other speciality - silken-centred buffalo mozzarella - maybe teamed with slivers of San Daniele prosciutto and a fistful of crostini. Then it's on to the main game - thin, perfectly chewy-crunchy pizzas, perhaps topped with truffle-oil-drizzled porcini, morel and field mushrooms and pecorino cheese; roasted peppers and hot salami; or heady gorgonzola with chicory leaves and lemon slices. Wash it down with an Italian micro-brewed beer. It must be said, this DOC felt a little ragged around the edges, the result, perhaps, of focus shifting to newer ventures nearby and on the Mornington Peninsula. The walls could have done with a coat of paint on our visit, the toilets needed a makeover, and the service can falter at times. Still, there are other rewards, including people-watching from outside tables. Say 'ciao' with desserts like Belgian white chocolate or strawberry pizza with icecream.
