Ayam Goreng 99

Indonesian

A few green, vine-like fronds circle the window and snake along the upper wall but after that, decor is at a minimum. But as the name suggests (it means 'fried chicken'), you're here for the chook. Opt for thigh or breast, char-grilled, deep-fried 'savoury' style or the sweeter Javanese style; add other marinated, fried tidbits such as tempeh, tofu or even tripe, a mound of white rice, sweet soy and thick, fiery sambal for dipping. That's the time-honoured Ayam Goreng experience. A slippery, garlicky mess of kangkong is a good side order, as is sweet-and-sour vegetable soup (sayur asem) thick with cabbage, peanuts and corn. Es telur (coconut, jelly, jackfruit and avocado ice drink) completes the meal.
