Bar Italia

Italian

Leichhardt has more than a few options when it comes to sophisticated Italian dining. Bar Italia isn't one of them. Here is an eatery that thrives on atmosphere, energy and simplicity. The busy storefront is equal parts cafe and gelato parlour, while the rear courtyard mixes it up between suburban RSL and rural Tuscan ristorante. Dishes are basic (school dinner-esque, even) but hearty: heaped bowls of pasta with plenty of toppings. The coffee is rather ordinary and service elusive, but the gelato is where it's at. For $9.50 you get four huge scoops from a terrific selection that includes chunky Toblerone and a mind-blowing real tiramisu.
