There are many ways you can enjoy this popular beachside favourite - inside, at a street-side table, on the terrace, under the pavilion, or in a leather armchair with the full tablecloth treatment. When it comes to all-day dining, Barrenjoey House has all the bases cleverly, casually and classily covered. Start with a handsome array of scallops touched with the crunch of breadcrumbs, the richness cut by ribbons of fennel and flat-leaf parsley; or perhaps a tasting plate of San Daniele ham, chunky, smoky babaghanoush and dense hummus. Fish of the day might be roasted Cone Bay barramundi, its flesh a tad soft, but nicely paired with a sweet and tangy slew of Sicilian eggplant stewed with tomatoes, celery, sultanas and pine nuts. Neat nubbins of smoked duck, sweetcorn and peas make for a pleasantly different risotto. Three scoops of superb Glace ice-cream may well prompt a snooze on the beach opposite, or in your room upstairs, if you're staying over.
