The Shakespeare Hotel

13/20

Contemporary

The Shakespeare is a proper English-style neighbourhood boozer. There's the dark and louche front bar where all sorts prop up on the rocky stools, the no-nonsense landlord, the cash-only set-up - and the $12.50 meals. The meals are huge: chilli salt squid is a titanic tangle of tender tentacles with salad and a pile of chips and a grilled chicken breast is big enough to feed two. The desserts appear made for giants, too, with door-wedge-size cakes and puddings with enough ice-cream to keep a child awake for days. And while you could nitpick with some of the finer points, at this price, why would you?
