A great neighbourhood restaurant is hard to find. The food needs to be good (but not too tricked up), the space must feel comfortable and the staff should be welcoming. Honeycomb ticks all the boxes. Away from bustling Victoria Street, it sits on a quiet Darlinghurst corner, tempting passersby with large bi-fold windows along one side. From more ambitious beginnings, Honeycomb has morphed into a pleasant, casual eatery, offering a rollcall of Italian favourites. A simple salad of heirloom tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and basil is a beautifully fresh start, but the calamari fritti fell short in the crisp stakes. More successful is osso buco bianco, accompanied by creamy mash, beautifully rich and moreish. Desserts are the real stars, however. A vanilla bean panna cotta is wonderfully wobbly, while a classic tiramisu is just as decadent as it should be. Bonus points to the staff, who are warm, knowledgeable and everything a good neighbourhood restaurant needs.
