Jipang

Japanese$$

Jipang was known as a noodle house, but these days beachy locals lap up the set menu combo of rice, miso soup and salad with choice of main. The garlicky karaage, juicy yakiniku and golden crumbed tonkatsu are all winners at this no-frills diner complete with eager Japanese staff sporting Aussie bandanas. Their Aussie bent may explain the ramen noodles' inauthentic lack of firmness, but the soup is layered with richness and is deeply satisfying. Chashu ramen is loaded with thick-cut roast pork, while curry ramen proves the two elements actually mesh. Beached-out offspring are kept happy with the kids' plate ($6.50) of rice and deep-fried delights.
