Laksa King

Malaysian

Bigger premises haven't lessened the queues at this long-time favourite, where customers wait patiently each night for their fix. The spacious room is light, bright and noisy, crammed with tables that turn over quickly. Laksa is the star attraction: head-sized bowls brimful of mixed noodles and protein- perhaps shrimp and fishcakes in a spicy sunset-orange coconut broth, or with fish and pineapple in a sharp tamarind stock. Other dishes are equally good: nasi lemak is a pleasing combination of coconut rice with pickled vegetables, anchovies, peanuts and hard-boiled egg, while smoky, slippery char kwai teow noodles are bulked up with prawns, Chinese sausage and a slight chilli hit.
