Milk crates in the laneway are the only seats here; the white-tiled brew nook offers standing room only inside, either at the bar or a sunny window ledge. So that's the way to take the coffee, brewed with beans from Melbourne's best specialty roasters. A Small Batch short black ($3.50) has a gentle tang and a dark chocolate finish; a Proud Mary-roasted El Salvador Finca Suiza in a pourover ($3.50 for 140ml) is sweet with passionfruit notes. Food is similarly minimal: custard doughnuts, a slice of tart and a range of breakfast pastries. Espresso and filter rule at this coffee-only bar, with a rotating roster of beans from Melbourne's best, and 140ml pourovers at just $3.50. The best seats are milk crates in the lane when the sun is shining.
