Pope Joan

Contemporary$$

A raw/recycled wood fitout seems de rigueur for any north-side cafe, but as with most things, Pope Joan does it with an extra dash of style. Ecclesiastical touches are limited to a few tomes on the eponymous Pope-ess and a reclaimed church pew out front- handy on weekends when brekkie often involves a wait. Patience: it's worth it to savour inventive stuff like 'coddled' egg with black pudding or sardines on toast jazzed up with feta and pinenuts. Sandwiches raise the bar again. The 'Cornish' features roast chook and stuffing with zippy jalapeno mayo, while a Cuban-style sarnie spreads mustardy mayo, laced with cornichons and shredded carrot, over a succulent slab of pork. Praise be.
