Contemporary

It's something of a miracle that this narrow, inside-outside laneway cafe produces food at all, much less such smart, high-flavour food. From the creamy breakfast rice with black quinoa, pepitas and stewed rhubarb to the smashed soft-boiled eggs with tarragon-infused hollandaise, it's simple but unexpectedly good. Owner Daniel Blackman pays as much attention to the chocolatey pours of Mecca's Dark Horse blend ($3.50) with rich Jersey milk, as he does with a daily single-origin special ($4) for black coffee-drinking regulars such as Rockpool chef Neil Perry. It's often hot inside, under the Scarface poster and the Mickey Mouse clock, so join the boho-chic set on a laneway stool.
