Contemporary

Behind the hedge of stately conifers lies a warm welcome and comfortable country hospitality. A fine way to relax after touring around the region's wineries and attractions, the interconnecting rooms and wrap-around veranda of this old Queenslander are a haven for those seeking good food and wine. There's nothing fussy about chef John Rogers' cooking, but he sure knows how to deliver flavour and contentment. An entree of house-made ravioli of local mushrooms in a thyme and chardonnay sauce, and a Mediterranean-inspired salad of tender subtly smoky Darling Downs quail are sublime in their simplicity. Don't hesitate to order a steak and a bottle of the restaurant's namesake, as the Kilcoy beef is some of the most tender and flavoursome around, done justice here with just enough char from the grill and served with bacon lardons, kipfler potatoes and thyme-scented jus. A glass of local sticky and the vanilla and rosemary poached pear with red wine ice-cream is a must.
