It's impossible to resist the appeal of Silo, Canberra's best bakery. It may have something to do with the irresistible smells in the air, or the sight of the shiny, colourful tarts (lemon, chocolate, almond, fig) and burnished, flakey croissants and pastries laid in rows on the long, marble counter. The bread transfixes, too: wicker baskets and shelves filled with dark to light rounds, loaves and baguettes, slashed through, dusty with roasted flour and marked with an 'S'. Come for these, and a Cosmorex coffee, and you'll leave happy. But then you'd miss out on a very good brekkie or lunch. Food is simple and seasonal, drawn from the European tradition. Shreds of salt cod tease up a chickpea salad, while grilled swordfish is paired with a melting mass of Sicilian tomato, celery and capers. The cheese room accommodates all tastes, with a goat's and ewe's plate and a range of blues, including a perfect creamy, tangy roquefort.
