The Commons claims to be Sydney’s cosiest venue, and in winter when the fireplaces are crackling it’s hard to argue. The cottagey sandstone building does its bit, too, as do seasonal food offerings and a group-grazing menu. Fried zucchini blossoms contrast crisp outer with oozing ricotta filling, while a pot of mussels – sweet, small, local – comes laced in a cream and white wine sauce that’s velvety enough to sip as an indulgent soup. Devilled spatchcock, a little bird with a saintly rub, is fragrant with spice, served with Tuscan cabbage and broccoli sauté. Cosy? Sure is.
