The Stunned Mullet

Good Food hat15/20

Modern Australian$$$

The Stunned Mullet is an impressive act, melding an attractive room by the sea with deftly handled food and an extensive wine selection. The room is moody by night. lit with architectural bulbs and table lamps, and a comfortable upholstered banquette, with a salty sea breeze wafting. Crisp king prawns, cloaked in wonton and fried, adorned with shiitake and enlivened by terrific yuzu miso, are surprisingly enhanced by spice-toasted oats. Salt-and-pepper squid is complex with five spice and the sweet punch of a master stock caramel, although its green papaya salad lacked spark. Milly Hill lamb rump is perfect, darkened by roasted mushroom, with caramelised witlof and white miso jus. Walnut and orange frangipane tart with grilled figs, gorgonzola ice-cream, sour cherry glaze and orange blossom honey confirms the skill that's gone before. The waiters are real enhancements, pleasantly friendly and knowledgeable.
