Marigold serves up its last yum cha as Sydney institution closes its doors
In the weeks and days leading up to its final day of service, patrons queued up outside the Marigold Chinese Restaurant in Sydney’s Chinatown to get their last taste of the institution’s beloved yum cha experience.
Among them was Sydney Labor councillor Linda Scott, enjoying a dumpling as a “great way to recover from an election while farewelling a giant of City of Sydney”.

But the outpouring of community support could not stop the inevitable on Sunday, when the Hong Kong-style Chinese restaurant offering Cantonese food served up its last prawn dumplings, mango pancakes and barbecued pork buns.
On November 1, the Haymarket restaurant announced it would close after being crippled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“With a heavy heart, we announce the closing of Marigold Restaurant,” the announcement read.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and travel. Sadly, it has also hit Marigold’s function business and weekday trading. As there are plans to extend the CityMark Building, it is time to say goodbye.”
The restaurant, at 683 George Street, reopened on October 11 when lockdown ended for greater Sydney and was its third location in the past 39 years, having first opened in Sydney at 299 Sussex Street in 1982.
